Description

The project provides a platform independent application launcher.

Written in Java, utilitising a Swing UI, this program provides a consistent user experience for application shortcuts across any platform, say Windows or Linux, with a supported JRE(1.5+).

The current release now uses JRE 1.5: an older 040417 release runs under 1.4 but is unsupported.

The launcher provides categories, or groups, of related shortcuts. These shortcuts consist of a name and a command, with optionally a description, icon, and sound for each item.

Configuration

Paunch is configurable for adding shortcuts via the user interface.

Lamenu - config file generation

In addition, a utility called Lamenu supports generation of Paunch's config file for freedesktop.org's Desktop Entry spec.
So if your unix environment uses .desktop files, Lamenu can create shortcuts for the applications on your computer. For further info, see the Lamenu README and download from here.
